Baked Veggies and Butter Tarts

I had a fun time last night cooking and baking. One of my favourite dishes to cook right now is just a mix of roasted vegetables. It takes an hour to make, but it’s an hour that I can spend doing homework while the veggies cook in the oven! I also made butter tarts for the first time. Because I have never made pie crust, I used a recipe I found for shortbread dough, and a high-rated recipe for the filling. I don’t like raisins so I tried a few with the plain butter filling, and a few with coconut. I think they turned out really well for a first try!

Pillows and Kitty

I recently completed my second sewing project that was to make pillow covers for my living room. Here they are! They are red and blue with a white cord. My plan is to eventually make four more: two that are blue and white with a red cord and two that are red and white with a blue cord. I also made a cover for a square pillow, this time with all of the same fabric that has a nice embroidered pattern on it. I’d like to make one or two more of those as well. I could definitely see myself getting faster as I went. Making my first ever pillow with the trim wasn’t easy! PillowsDSCN8738DSCN8742

I also want to introduce you to another member we have in the house. Karan my roommate is taking care of his mother’s cat for a month. The cat’s name is Manu. He is a beautiful grey colour and quite cute but unfortunately isn’t the friendliest cat to strangers. Mostly we leave each other alone, though while I was sewing he sat on the back of the couch and watched me, and also played with the fabric while I was laying it out to cut the patterns. Over all it is a nice experience to have a pet in the house, though I think I will always be more of  a dog person.

Homely Living Room

BookcaseShelvesI’ve been living at my apartment in Cambridge for five months now. It is nice to think that I will not have to move for at least a year. My place is finally feeling like home. At other places I lived I would spend most of my time in my room, but at this place the living room feels like my own and I enjoy spending time there. I’m very happy too that my orchid is blooming like crazy!DSCN9297

My First Scarf

This past week I finished knitting my first scarf! I learned how to knit from YouTube videos back in November and have been working on it slowly since then. Because I didn’t want to do a standard stitch, I tried the Bamboo stitch which creates little columns into which I wove white yarn at the very end. It was a lot of fun but I think I’m going to put away my knitting needles until next winter because it is too good a procrastinating activity!

Dear Apartment;

Apartment

I just moved to Cambridge and unfortunately I am still feeling displaced. Maybe it’s because the place is too big for me to fill; maybe it’s because it doesn’t have the same quirky character or that it’s not located in as lively a city as Toronto. I’m sure that it will become home to me over time as I begin to fill the space, cover the walls, and create memories in this new place. Until then though, here is a tribute to my old apartment in the Junction Triangle:

Dear Apartment;

I will miss you.

I will miss the way I could open up the door to fire escape and just leave it open rain or shine whenever I was home in the summer.

I will miss the way I could sing and play guitar at any time of night because my neighbours couldn’t hear me.

I will miss my loft bed and how it gave the room character and made the space livable.

I will miss hosting couch surfers.

In some ways I will miss living alone just because I could do quirky things that would normally probably annoy a roommate like take a long bath while watching a movie on my computer, drip dry my sheets from the shower curtain bar, or listen to an italian language lesson while cooking dinner.

I will miss the way the kitchen was slightly seperate from the living area so that I didn’t necessarily have to wash my dishes right away.

I will miss the red sky sunsets and the strange, industrial view

I will miss my favourite cafes, restaurants, and shops: Toronto Coffee and Tea House, Starving Artist, Zocalo, Salvation Army Thrift Store, and Ransack the Universe.

I will miss not having to worry about messing up my walls and using masking tape to hang up my beer coaster collection.

You will always remain fondly in my memory as my first real home in Toronto.

Sincerely,Your occupant,

Lise
